Outstanding in the Field at Blackbird Farm

By now, you have probably heard of the farm-to-table initiative, but Outstanding in the Field brings a whole new meaning to the term. This National culinary tour kicks it up a notch and brings the entire table to the farm, traveling from state-to-state, stretching all the way from California to New England and everywhere in between. Last weekend, they stopped by one of my favorites, Blackbird FarmΒ in Smithfield, RI, and I was excited to be a part of this unique dining experience.

For 10 years, Outstanding in the Field has been reconnecting diners with the land and the farmers who cultivate their food. Since then, they have organized 400+ events at 200 farms across North America (plus 8 other countries). This pop-up food movement has welcomed a growing total of 55,000+ guests to dine at their nomadic communal tables…so let’s just say Outstanding in the Field is a pretty big deal in the food world. And to make OITF’s visit to Blackbird Farm even bigger and better, Chef Matthew Varga and the Gracies’ Team were preparing dinner. How cool is that?

field9Ann Marie Bouthillette is the owner of Blackbird Farm. She was radiating with passion during our tour. She emphasized the importance ofΒ all-natural, hormone-free, pasture-fed animals. They do everything the right way at Blackbird Farm and she is very proud of her work. We equally appreciated her hard work and tasted the difference during our meal later that day.

Blackbird Farm mainly raises 100% Black Angus cattle and 100% pedigreed Berkshire pigs (which is basically the Angus of Pork). This is some of the best quality Angus beef you will find anywhere in the country.

field3It’s been a fun, long time tradition for diners to bring their own plates to OITF events for a colorful table setting. Don’t worry…you won’t be stuck washing dishes. Your plate is returned clean prior to heading home. πŸ™‚

Here are some of the highlights from our entire meal:

Another special thanks to the Bouthillette Family and all the farmers and producers involved last weekend. Check out the Blackbird Farmstand located on Douglas Pike in Smithfield where you can purchase top quality meat and produce. Take advantage of this awesome farm. They are making Rhode Island proud!
