Just Go with the FLO!!!

When the weather gets warm, Rhode Islanders only care about two things: the beach and deep-fried seafood. I’m tired of hearing people talk about Iggy’s and Aunt Carrie’s. Blah, Blah, Blah. It’s time to switch it up and visit someplace new. There’s another Clam Shack near Easton’s Beach that is underrated and does not get the recognition it deserves. Flo’s Clam Shack, with locations in Middletown (on the Newport line) and Portsmouth, is one of my favorite summer dining destinations…especially when it comes to clams!

First, let’s talk about the Clam Cakes. We ordered a half dozen and were given seven by mistake. Yup, we were off to a great start! πŸ™‚

There is nothing worse than eating an entire Clam Cake without any clams inside. I’m sure we have all experienced this feeling of disappointment. Well, that’s definitely not the case at Flo’s. These crispy, golden, deep-fried orbs were packed with plenty of clams. The center of the Clam Cakes tasted slightly dense in comparison to the competitors, making Flo’s version more of a meal than just a snack. Nonetheless, I found themΒ extremely addictiveΒ and they definitely hit the spot!

I have to be honest, I did not enjoy the White Clam Chowder. It was much too watery for my liking. Although it was flavorful, I just wish it was thicker and creamier. On a positive note, it was loaded with chunks of potatoes and massive amounts of clams (you are going to hear me say that a lot throughout my meal).

I know what you’re thinking. What in the world is that colossal pile of deep-fried seafood? Is that a hot dog bun underneath?

This is Flo’s signature Fried Whole Belly Clam Roll. And yes, it is meant to be eaten as a sandwich…which is nearly impossible. It’s a bit on the expensive side at around $13.95, but it’s worth it. In fact, it was even featured on Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate” by Chef Chris Cosentino. I would also recommend it to anyone that likes Whole Belly Clams!!!

In case you don’t love everything deep-fried like me, Flo’s also has a Raw Bar upstairs where you can order Littlenecks, Oysters, and lots more. So next time you are in Newport, make it a point to stroll down to Flo’s Clam Shack on Wave Ave. Heck, I made a special trip to Flo’s just because it was a nice day…and I plan to do it again very soon. See you there!!!
