Did you know that last week was National Margarita Week? Well, we sure did. And that’s exactly why we headed down to Lola’s Tequila Bar & Cantina in Providence for an all-out fiesta full of gut-busting fare, delicious mixed drinks, and live music from a popular
Mariachi band Bluegrass band (it happened to be Thursday which is Bluegrass and Burritos Night). And that was just the beginning of the party!
Lola’s fun, inviting atmosphere was the perfect place to celebrate this festive occasion. Full of bright, vibrant colors, hot pink accents, and other whimsical decor, Lola’s eye-popping interior was designed by HGTV star Taniya Nayak. But the real star of Lola’s is Executive Chef Jonathan Beres who put on a show of his own that night, cooking up one delicious dish after another.
Of course we started with a round of drinks! This Margarita was VERY sweet. It tasted like fruit punch mixed with Tequila…which is not necessarily a bad thing.
This was more my speed. Simple. Classic. Delicious.
We were also told that all drinks are hand-crafted and mixed to order.
Our favorite was the Sun-dried Tomato Salsa. I know what you’re thinking…sun-dried tomatoes in salsa??? Well, it worked! With the addition of jalapenos and other chillies, this salsa was mildly spicy and unique!
I love a good ceviche and this was certainly a good start to our meal. Honestly, I usually don’t like grapefruit because of its overly bitter, pungent taste. However, I never would have know here. It blended wonderfully with all of the other ingredients in the dish. It was sweet, tangy, and full of citrus flavor.
This shrimp dish was perfect – there’s really no other way to describe it. It had an amazing crunch and was swimming in a pool of spicy ranchero sauce. My only complaint…I wish there was more of it!!! Not a bad complaint to have!
This turned out to be my favorite dish of the night. It tasted super fresh and Chef Beres later informed us that the salmon was delivered 2 hours before it landed on our plate. Other than grabbing it right out of the ocean, it doesn’t get much fresher than that.
Apparently there were supposed to be habanero peppers in this dish, but I could barely taste any heat. I braced myself as I expected it it to be much spicier. Oh well, it still tasted awesome either way!
What’s not to like about a deep-fried burrito? I mean, seriously, how could this be bad?! Sure enough, it was delicious!
I just wish there was less cilantro. This was the fourth dish in a row that had an excessive amount sprinkled on top as garnish. It was easy to brush off, but judging on the progression of the meal, I would have liked less cilantro so the flavors didn’t taste so redundant after a while. Overall, not a big deal though!
I was told that this mole sauce is made with 33 different ingredients! It was loaded with complex flavors, chocolate notes, and some spicy seasoning. Each bite had me searching for different flavors, eagerly trying to detect each and every component…which I learned is nearly impossible. I guess you will need to try this one for yourself!
I have had bad experiences with spicy Margaritas in the past (most notably when using muddled jalapenos) so I was a bit apprehensive to try this. To my surprise, it was actually palatable. Any drink with the name “fiery” still won’t be my top choice on the drink menu in the future, but this version was definitely more enjoyable than others I have tried.
I just want to be clear…I did not order this. My wife did. She is sassy. I am not. Plus, I’m a dude so I can’t be seen drinking Strawberry Margaritas in public. Ya know what I mean 🙂
The chocolate sauce was decadent and rich, but it was a bit too thick for my liking. It didn’t soak up the churro the way I had hoped for. I also detected something spicy in this dessert which tasted like cayenne. I would have preferred a more traditional churro that was simple and sweet.
This was our first time at Lola’s and we definitely plan on returning again soon. Whether you are craving some Mexican cuisine or just looking for a fun place to grab drinks with friends, both are great reasons to head down to Lola’s Tequila Bar & Cantina in Providence. At Lola’s, they treat every week like National Margarita Week…so find out for yourself what all the buzz is about!
