Why You Should Scamper on Over to Scampo

Honestly, I don’t know what has taken me so long, but I finally managed to make it down to the Liberty Hotel in Boston to dine at Scampo. This acclaimed restaurant was recognized by Esquire Magazine as one of the “Best New Restaurants” in America in 2008 and it’s been buzzed about ever since…and for good reason.  Scampo, Chef Lydia Shire’s sixth restaurant, takes Italian-inspired dishes with some Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. Chef Lydia Shire is known for creating flavors as bold as her dazzling, bright red hair…and Scampo is no exception.

What really lured me to Scampo was the dish pictured above. I know what you’re thinking…it looks like an ordinary pizza. WRONG! Recently named as the best pizza in Massachusetts by Food Network Magazine – this is the LOBSTER PIZZA!!!

Dishes like this make my job as a food writer incredibly easy. You know this has to taste amazing. I mean, it’s a pizza with lobster dammit! 🙂

The buttery dough was slathered with lobster cream and had huge chunks of lobster tail generously scattered throughout. Also containing some salty Ricotta Salata, Caramelized Onions, Scallions, and Parsley, this pie was outrageously good. If I am ever on death row, I will definitely request this, which is ironic since Scampo is located in the Liberty Hotel, the former Charles Street Jail.

Potato and Chestnut Gnocchi with Comice Pear, Toasted Sage Leaves & Brown Butter

This may not have been the most appetizing thing to look at, but it sure tasted great! Unlike some gnocchi which can be heavy and dense, these were deceiving light and moist. They were deliciously soaked in a brown butter sauce which caused the gnocchi to melt in my mouth. I also liked the thin slice of pear which added some nice freshness to the dish.

Crisp Boneless Duck Basted in Muscat Wine with Parsnip and Quince

For my entree, I ordered the duck which was de-boned and then roasted for hours, making the meat incredibly tender. It was also cooked with the skin on to create a crispy, out-of-this-world, crunchy exterior. I enjoyed the parsnip puree which added some flavors of the fall but I was not entirely fond of the quince. One puree would have been enough for me.

Overall, it was a great dish. I would highly recommend it.

Crisped Haddock Parmigiana with Hot Picked Maine Crab

My wife ordered the Crisped Haddock Parmigiana. The flavor of this dish made up for the sloppy presentation (including the massive amounts of unnecessary garnish which seems to be their trademark). Aside from that, the haddock itself was cooked to perfection. The parmigiana crust was slightly salty which paired well with the sweetness of the crab on top. I kept dipping the fish in the butter sauce as opposed to the parsnip puree (which appeared in this dish again) on the side. In fact, I thought the parsnips clashed with the other ingredients in the dish.

I appreciated the simplicity of this entree. If you are looking for some straightforward yet delicious flavors, you may want to try the Haddock.

Soft Polenta with Chive Butter and Fried Onions. Both creamy and buttery, it was the perfect side to our meal.

Green Beans Tempura with Truffled Mayo and Tahini Sauce. I was not a fan of this. It reminded me of an appetizer at TGI Fridays…

In the end, we enjoyed our meal at Scampo. Our favorite dish was undoubtedly the Lobster Pizza. This one-of-a-kind pizza is one of the many reasons you should visit this popular restaurant. So scamper on over the Scampo and find out for yourself what all the hype is about!
