Fleming’s Steakhouse in Downtown Providence

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, located on the ground floor of the Westin Hotel in Providence, has made quite the name for themselves in and around town. Not only do they use superior quality ingredients in their dishes, but they also feature over 100 glasses of wine, making Fleming’s the ultimate dinner destination for both food and drink.

Some red wine paired with some red meat – you can’t beat that! So we headed Downtown to this highly celebrated steakhouse to taste their menu first hand.

Tenderloin Carpaccio with caper creole mustard sauce and red onion

We started with the Tenderloin Carpaccio to taste the quality of the beef in its purest form. These paper-thin slices of raw beef were bursting with flavor. Be warned – this tasty appetizer is not for the timid, unadventurous diner. If you are brave enough to dive into this delectable dish, brace yourself for the ultimate experience in…BEEF!

The Tenderloin Carpaccio was served alongside some crostinis, allowing you to make bite sized, open-faced sandwiches. The melted cheese atop each slice of bread was a bit overwhelming at times but that didn’t stop us from cleaning the plate. We were still able to distinguish the strong flavor of the beef during each bite.

We were also drawn to another Fleming’s staple: their Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes.  Accompanied by a creamy roasted pepper and lime sauce, the pair of seared cakes were to die for. We enjoyed the overall textures and flavors although we wished the Crab Cakes were a bit bigger.

Lamb Chops Play Along: Fleming’s Edition

New Zealand Lamb Chops (pictured atop of page) were a smash hit. These were without contest, the best damn lamb chops we’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked, and we mean juices flowing, pink center, tender, perfect. Fleming’s has a thing for peppercorn (steak; pictured below) and they know how to keep a good concept going. Each bite led to delightful nodes of heat from the peppercorn and sweetness from the Madeira sauce.

In our opinion, there are few things in this world better than some top quality steak. It’s simple, straightforward, yet delicious. It’s unpretentious. You always know what to expect. A sultry slab of steak served in the center of the dish, inviting you to cut into its slightly pink center. The fatty juices are extracted from its interior. Seriously, there are few things better than this…

Fleming’s NY Strip was everything we love about a good steak. It was cooked to perfection. Seriously, a textbook style “medium” that students at the Culinary Institute of America should be taking notes on. The charred outer crust from the Peppercorns made for a great contrast in textures and provided some serious heat. It will leave your mouth tingling, but in an enjoyable way.

Fleming’s Potatoes with cream, jalapeno, and cheddar cheese

We decided to go with their famous house specialty as one of our sides. These potatoes were cleverly layered and cut with a mandolin, then stacked sky-high and topped with some bubbly, melted cheddar cheese. Bits of jalapeno were added in between layers to ensure you get some heat as you work your way down to the bottom. These fiery spuds are not your mama’s potatoes. Nope…But we bet they would even have your mama asking for seconds!

We continued to feed our need for cheese and ordered a side of their Baked Chipotle Mac n’ Cheese.  An American classic with a Fleming’s twist. Very subtle hints of chipotle laced the spiral shape pieces of cheesy, gooey, pasta. Highly recommended.

And to think after all that food we had room for dessert….

And here we have the crème brulee; a creamy Tahitian vanilla bean custard served with fresh seasonal berries. No bells or whistles here. Just some creamy custard buried beneath a hard layer of caramel, blow-torched to perfection.  Fleming’s rendition was just as we expected – delicious.

Frozen Lemon Gingersnap Pie w/ a Raspberry Lemon Foam Sauce

After a dinner filled with deep, rich flavors, it was time for a refreshing, cool end to an amazing night. Nothing immediately jumped off the page with this dessert, although we did enjoy the tartness of the frozen lemon custard.


Fleming’s is the perfect place to go before or after a show at Trinity Rep, the Dunkin’ Donuts Center or the Providence Performing Arts Center. And they are just a skywalk away from the Providence Place Mall. Doesn’t get anymore convenient than that!
