XO Café Returns to Providence

Favorite Destination Back to Stake its Claim on the Dining Scene

“When XO opened 14 years ago, it set the standard for dining in Providence,” said John Elkhay, Maestro of the Chow Fun Food Group.  “With the encouragement of so many of our loyal guests who are looking for a creative yet comfortable dining experience with the highest level of service, we are proud to bring this landmark restaurant back to the City, with new and traditional flavors and even a familiar face or two.”

Most recently the home of the French brasserie, Café Noir, Elkhay converted the beloved space back into the restaurant that had received international and critical acclaim for its cuisine, service and design until it closed in 2008.  With a romantic, sexy and seductive atmosphere, the central theme at XO is the beauty of the human form, from the female busts that adorn the bar to the wire and mesh forms of men and women that cavort on the walls. This playful and seductive attitude will continue to spill over to the menu, with playfully composed dishes inspired by the finest natural and local ingredients.

The new XO Café will feature a “farm-to-table” culinary philosophy, led by Executive Chef Simon Keating.  Chef Keating, a native of Devon, England, boasts more than 20 years of culinary experience, including a five-year tenure as executive Chef at the Woolacombe Bay Hotel in Devon, where he operated the property’s fine dining restaurant and opened the more casual Bay Brasserie.  Upon arriving in the United States, Chef Keating was the chef and manager at L’Elizabeth in Providence, where he was responsible for breakfast and lunch service during the day as well as tapas in the evening.

Chef Keating promises to maintain the integrity of XO favorites while providing guests with fresh and inventive new dishes.  Beginning with the traditional end of the meal, XO Café, encourages guests to order dessert first, because “life is short.”  The menu will include English Bread Pudding with caramel sauce and Hill Farm pear sorbet; an Ice Cream Sampler with house made sugar cones; and Molten Chocolate Cake with Schartner Farm raspberry sorbet.

XO’s dinner menu will begin a selection of appetizers, including Ahi Tuna Nicoise with tomato confit, olive tapenade, and frisee; Fried Baffoni Chicken & Waffle with Rhode Island maple syrup; “The Original” XO Caesar Salad; and the classic XO Bento Box: lobster wontons with Thai dipping sauce, beef teriyaki with soy sake, Portobello mushroom fries, and crispy calamari with chipotle mayonnaise.

XO entrees will feature the original XO Filet with seared scallops, asparagus, and macadamia nut butter (pictured above), Baffoni Farms Roasted Chicken with garlic polenta, roasted ratatouille, and Narragansett mozarella; Duck Menage a Trois: a roasted breast, ravioli confit, and shiitake spring roll with griottine cherry sauce; and Caramelized Bomster Scallops with asparagus risotto and spring pea buerre blanc.

XO’s grill offerings will feature a variety of cuts of Hereford beef, including an 8oz Filet Mignon, 14oz New York Sirloin, and 18oz Prime Rib Eye, all served with a choice of sauces.  Side dishes include Roasted Vegetables, Grilled Asparagus, Pommes Puree, Fresh Cut Schartner Farm Fries, and Lobster Mac & Cheese.

Caramelized Bombster Scallops, Asparagus Risotto, Spring Pea Buerre Blanc

XO’s bar menu will feature Onion Soup Gratinee: caramelized onions in a rich chicken broth baked with Gruyere cheese; Lobster Wontons with apricot Thai dipping sauce; D’Luxe BLT Burger featuring Blackbird Farm beef, chicken fried bacon, ripe tomatoes, Bibb lettuce, and secret sauce; the XO Grilled Cheese: braised short ribs and Gruyere cheese on house made bread; and Mushroom Bolognese: many wild mushrooms, hand-cut fettuccini, parmesan cream, and truffle oil.

True to the heritage of XO Café, a selection of “old school” and “new school” cocktails will be offered.  Old School selections include the Espresso Martini with Pinnacle vanilla vodka, Kahlua, Tia Maria, and fresh espresso; Love Potion #9: Absolut Kurant, Alize red passion, and orange juice; the XOXO Martini: Bombay Sapphire gin with gorgonzola-stuffed olives; and the Prickly Pear Margarita: Sauza Gold tequila, triple sec, citrus mix, and prickly pear juice.

New School selections are the Queen B: Absolut Pears, elderflower liqueur, and a lemon twist; Pecan Pie: roasted pecan infused vodka, soda water, maple syrup, and candied pecans; and Tiger’s Blood: Absolut Ruby Red, lime, prickly pear juice, and a sugared rim.

XO Café will serve dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Brunch hours will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., starting on May 8th.
