Congratulations to The Mooring who celebrated their 30th Anniversary last weekend, a magnificent milestone. For three decades, The Mooring has been serving some of the finest Seafood within the Ocean State. We were truly honored to be invited to this exclusive event, not only taste their food, but to be part of the celebration itself.
As we crossed the Newport Bridge, we immediately smelled the ocean-scented air. There was a cool, calming breeze that was both peaceful and serene. It was a beautiful day to enjoy a meal at The Mooring, overlooking Narragansett Bay. Their charming interior paired with panoramic waterfront views made for the ultimate dining experience.
Here is a visual recap of our amazing night at The Mooring:
The Mooring offers an impressive Raw Bar with New England staples like lobster claws, oysters and smoked mussels. During the event, we were presented with a few of their favorites.
The shrimps were plump and succulent, and foreshadowed the awesomeness that lay ahead. The shellfish were the main attractions though. People were lining up for these bad boys and we couldn’t blame them.
It was without question, the freshest and cleanest seafood we have tasted in a long, long time. We didn’t bother with the sauces. All we wanted to taste were the natural flavors and salt from the waters. Now that’s seafood at its best.
These crab cakes were surreal. They were incredibly soft on the inside, teetering towards “melt-in-your mouth” goodness. The chef maintained the integrity of the crab as its natural, sweet flavors shined through. The pan seared exterior gave the cakes a nice, subtle crunch and meshed well with the tartar sauce.
Have you ever gone to a buffet or restaurant and ordered mussels? Then when they arrive it’s just a bowl of shells swimming in a pool of lukewarm water? Well, you will NEVER experience that at The Mooring. Their spin on Mussels Zuppa is out of this world tasty.
The fiery broth was hot enough to enjoy without having to wipe our foreheads. It was perfectly balanced. The amount of mussels seemed endless, which was great because we couldn’t get enough of them! Quite easily one of the best appetizers we have had anywhere. We implore you to order this dish. You will love it!
The Mooring clearly takes pride in using superior quality seafood. These scallops literally tasted like they were caught minutes before they were cooked. As you can see in the picture above, the scallops were seared perfectly.
The Chive Blossom Vinaigrette was delectable at first but became slightly overpowering by the end. It also made the polenta soggy so I would have preferred the polenta on the side. Nonetheless, it was still a great dish, mainly due to the quality of the scallops. Also, did I mention it had pancetta? How can you go wrong?!!
Talk about an all-star lineup. Lobster, scallops and shrimp tossed in a Garlic-Herb butter atop a mound of Angel Hair is a divine combination. Every bite of the lobster led to a smile, and to look down and see perfectly tender sea scallops, it was truly the highlight of the night.
Our amazing waiter mentioned it was the most popular dish on the menu, and we now know why!
This dessert was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. Of the trio, Nick’s favorite was the Blood Orange. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess. Chris had a different opinion – the raspberry was his favorite. Chris is a bit biased though because he loves everything raspberry flavored (even beer!).
Cool and refreshing, the trio is a great option for the indecisive crowd because all three flavors are outrageously good!
What can we say. The 30th Anniversary Party at The Mooring was an unforgettable experience. The hospitality, wait staff, and ambiance left us speechless. From everyone at Front Row Eats, here’s to another 30 years!
