Exclusive Tasting at Temazcal Tequila Cantina

The Front Row Eats team was honored to be invited to a private event to celebrate the Grand Opening of Temazcal Tequila Cantina, a new upscale Mexican restaurant located at Liberty Wharf in Boston. We were lucky enough to be the first to taste a large selection of their menu prior to the restaurant being open to the public. As always, we took lots of photos and wanted to be sure to share our experience with all of you!

Chef Hall (pictured above with Nick B. of Front Row Eats) has opened some of the most renowned Mexican Restaurants in the country. He spent extensive time in Mexico researching the history and culture of the region’s cuisine, allowing him to bring some authentic Mexican flavor to Boston at Temazcal Tequila Cantina. For this Grand Opening party, he went above and beyond by preparing a wide variety of dishes from their menu.

What you see above is Temazcal’s menu…served on an iPad! They are actually the first restaurant in America to offer this feature. Tech savvy patrons can browse through colored pictures of the dishes, preparation, nutritional facts, and history/influence, etc. Talk about innovative! For those that prefer the traditional format, a regular menu is also available…but that’s boring.

We were greeted at the door with a glass of La Casita, the house Margarita. This tasty drink was generously filled with Tequila and started the fiesta off right.

Another drink we were able to taste was the Sangria Rojo. It was a lighter, fruitier version of traditional Sangria. The flavor of the wine was prominent and it was a great accompaniment to the food.

“A party isn’t a party without some Roast Suckling Pig”

The Lechon Asado was an absolute showstopper. The presentation was awe-inspiring and left our mouths watering. They carved me a generous piece of both the meat and….the skin! Without exaggeration, the meat was the juiciest piece of pork I have ever tasted. It was incredibly tender and succulent. I have not been able to stop thinking about it since!

“Camarones Rellenos Culiacan”

We thoroughly enjoyed the Prawns stuffed with Chorizo and wrapped in Bacon. But honestly, who wouldn’t love this?! You can just about stuff anything with Chorizo and wrap it in bacon and it will taste delicious! The ancho aioli subtly coated the exterior and provided a nice hint of spiciness.

“En Fuego Cocktail”

This drink lives up to its name with its fiery flavor. Be prepared because they muddle Jalapenos to create this spicy beverage. I would recommend this in shot form rather than an entire glass.

“Codorniz Rellena – A must try!”

Our favorite dish of the night was unquestionably the roasted Quail. It was unbelievably tender and has forever changed my perception of poultry. This dish was a stroke of genius and I personally complimented Chef Hall on this masterpiece. Needless to say, I will definitely be ordering this again upon my return.

“Tacos de Carnitas”

These are not your typical tacos. All of the ingredients were super fresh and of superior quality. The tortilla was fluffy and grilled to give a smoky, charred flavor. The inside was heavily filled with pulled pork, avocado, jalapenos, and Napa cabbage.

Flan is an extremely temperamental dessert, but Temazcal’s version was baked to perfection. They achieved a remarkably soft, silky texture that was both airy and light. It was topped with freeze-dried corn giving it an added crunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the crust, something you don’t see in traditional flans.

And here we have the Tres Leches cake. It was topped with chocolate covered banana and sliced mango over a bed of whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. The cake was soaked in milk but maintained a great consistency, not the least bit soggy. You need to taste Temazcal’s Tres Leches! Vamos!

The Uva Cocktail

As the night winded down, we decided to relax with one more glass of their handcrafted cocktails. The Uva is made with muddled limes as well as white and concord grapes. It had a great sweet and sour contrast with a refreshing finish. I guess we saved the best for last because this turned out to be our favorite drink of the night!

In addition to the mixed drinks we tasted, Temazcal also offers over 300 of the finest Tequilas in the world. You can also enjoy a drink on their waterfront patio or at their 52 foot bar. Either way, Temzacal is truly the ultimate Tequila Bar.

We enjoyed our experience at the Grand Opening of Temazcal Tequila Cantina and plan to return again VERY soon.  If you are looking to grab a Margarita and taste some of the finest dishes Mexico has to offer, Temazcal is the perfect place. The ambiance of the interior coupled with the waterfront view make Temazcal the ideal location to dine with family, friends, co-workers, etc.

I overheard that Temazcal will not be taking reservations during the first month, so if you plan to go, I would recommend arriving early. I expect this restaurant to be a huge success and jam-packed on a nightly basis, and deservingly so. If you want to try some of the most authentic dishes north of Mexico, derived from Mayan, Aztec, and Yucatan influences, take a stroll down to Liberty Wharf in Boston and taste Temazcal Tequila Cantina.
